Programs and Supportive Services offered by

SCDAA-MOBILE Chapter

Counseling Programs
Counseling is available free of charge to all persons identified as having sickle cell disease, trait or one of its variants so that they can make informed decisions about their lives. In addition, prenatal education is available for couples (both partners with trait and/or disease) identified as at risk for having a child affected with sickle cell disease or trait.

Education Programs
One main objective of the Association is to provide accurate information about sickle cell disease and related hemoglobinopathies to all interested parties. Public Service Announcements, newspaper articles and pamphlets are developed periodically and are distributed but not limited to educational institutions (schools, colleges and universities), churches, medical and healthcare professionals, educators, social workers and/or any other groups.

Educator/Counselor Certification Program
The Sickle Cell Certification program was designed to train and certify sickle cell educators and counselors to provide education and counseling to individuals diagnosed with sickle cell disease and other related hemoglobinopathies and offer education to heathcare professionals, paraprofessionals, as well as to individuals directly affected by sickle cell disease and other interested audiences about these disorders.

Case Management and Supportive Services

The Case Management Program provides social support for pediatric and adult clients. The social workers assist clients with accessing many resources relating to
housing, transportation, child care, medication and insurance programs, vocational and educational needs. Client referrals often originate from the Association and the clients are directed accordingly. The social workers also routinely render case management services to patients that are seen in the University of South Alabama Pediatric and Adult Comprehensive Sickle Cell Clinics. Our ultimate program goal is to empower our clients with viable information and knowledge that will be utilized to improve the quality of their lives.
